British rugby player to swim Atlantic
LONDON, May 13 (UPI) — British rugby player Dan Martin says he put on 56 pounds in preparation for reaching his goal of being the first person to swim across the Atlantic Ocean. Martin, 30, has been training for more than three years to swim 3,500 miles from New York to Brest in France, The Daily Telegraph reported Sunday. The swim — the first stage of his 18-month “global triathlon” — will take him between four and six months, Martin estimated.

The 21-year-old ex-Petone club player moved to Blenheim earlier this season to take up his new role as Marlborough Rugby Sub-Union junior development officer, his move to Tasman sealed by a phone call from Tasman Makos assistant coach Leon MacDonald following similar interest from North Harbour.
