New Zealand knights World Cup-winning rugby coach
WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — Rugby World Cup-winning All Blacks coach Graham Henry has been awarded a knighthood in New Zealand ‘s annual New Year Honors List as the rugby-mad nation continues to celebrate its first world title in 24 years. The 65-year-old former school teacher, who resigned the All Blacks coaching job after the World Cup final in October, is now Sir Graham Henry and the latest of a handful of former players or coaches to receive one of New Zealand’s highest honors. Martin Snedden, the former test cricketer who headed the company that organized the World Cup, has been made a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit , one step down from a knighthood.

Afghanistan kicked off its first official rugby tournament on Friday, with organisers hoping the game will one day be as popular as buzkashi , a kind of polo played with the carcass of a headless goat. Cricket and football have already gained a strong following, and regional sporting success has offered a rare glimmer of hope in the war-wracked country. But enthusiasts believe Afghans, who have faced decades of conflict and hardship, are even better suited to the rough and tumble of the rugby field, which is more akin the national sport buzkashi, without the need for horses

Needing to almost win out for a chance at his sixth consecutive Sprint Cup, Jimmie Johnson had every opportunity to make that happen after Tony Stewart passed him less than three laps from the finish of Sunday’s crash-filled race at Martinsville Speedway. He opted not to use a bump-and-run to win — and Stewart knew he wouldn’t

MARTINSVILLE, Va. (AP) — Jimmie Johnson said it’s “crazy” to suggest his reputation has been tarnished by crew chief Chad Knaus’ instructions to mess up the rear bumper if he won at Talladega last week. Knaus was recorded telling the five-time defending champion that if he won, he needed to “crack the back of the car,” apparently to build an explanation in case the car did not past post-race inspection

World Cup boss Martin Snedden’s heart may belong to the All Blacks but he is unlikely to take much joy in a big win for the New Zealand rugby side over Australia in Saturday’s Tri-Nations decider in Brisbane. With organisers still about NZ$30 million ($25 million) short of their NZ$268.5 million target for ticket revenue, Snedden has crossed the Tasman Sea to spruik the tournament to Australians who may remain unconvinced about the second-ranked Wallabies’ chances at the World Cup

The boss of international rugby says coaches know they have an obligation to entertain as well as win at the World Cup, but expects survival instincts will take over when the tournament reaches its final weeks. While there is great anticipation in the buildup to the quadrennial tournament, more often than not it disappoints as a spectacle, no more so than four years ago when the France event was marred by a series of boring kick-a-thons as the competition reached the knockout phases
